WiFi for old hotel
Author gfcor Posted time 2009-09-22 17:54:12
Contents I have an old historic hotel that I want to put WiFi in. The construction of the main walls is wire mesh plaster with wood lathe. The arrangement of each floor is in the shape of an "I". I was thinking of putting the router in the center of the main hall. What kind of antenna system do I need?

Contents Overall the building is about 105 feet by 86 feet. It is four stories plus a small attic space on the top, so my estimate is 50-60 feet high. The building is shaped like an I so the main hallway on each floor is about 72 feet long. As I think I said before the construction is concrete and brick and the interior walls are often heavy cement mortar like plaster over a wire mesh. Remodeled walls are 5/8" inch drywall. The floor/ceilings are poured reinforced concrete and seem very thick. Outside walls are red fired brick and mortar.

I put a basic router with DD-WRT firmware on the fourth floor in the middle of the main hallway. At 71mw it generally covered the floor, power did drop off in the far corner rooms. So I powered up the signal and got good coverage across the floor. So I am thinking I can place the antennas near the middle of the main floor on each floor and cover the floor with high quality signal.

The next question my boss had for me was can we mount the router in a service closet and run the coax to the antennas in the middle of the main hallway ceiling. So my question is how long of a cable run can I have on my antennas? Next what kind of antennas do I use? Since I got good coverage with the basic attached antennas on the little linksys, I am surmising a good quality omni directional antenna will work, is that correct? Do I need to put one router per floor or should I be able to get two floors per router? Any ideas on that would be helpful as well.

Thanks again for your input and let me know if there are any further questions.

Contents Before we suggest that antenna you need, we might need more detail about your hotel.

If you don't mind we would like to know how big is your hotel, it will be better you can offer us the plane of the hotel.
Then we can check it and make the suggestion to you.

Please email the information to sales@wifi-link.com

Thank you very much
