My mom who lives less than 3 tenths of a mile down the road has a satelte dish connection. I want to connect my tower and laptop to it for under 200$. The laptop is wifi ready and the tower has an eithernet jack. There are some trees between us, but if memory serves me correctly, last winter I could see the window of the room her router is in from the room that my tower is in. What equipment should I purchase initaly?

You might still need the AP to connect with your tower, and this antenna set to work with your AP.
If you can not setup the antenna with your neighbor. you can just order the Yagi type antenna with coaxial cable to work with AP, which will save more. Yagi antenna will get better perofmance when the area has trees. Below is the link for the Yagi antenna.
