Sharing Connection !
Author Wabo Posted time 2007-08-04 15:22:56
Contents Hi !

OK my plan is to share Internet connection with one of my 3 friends around my house and I.m just wondering what would be my approx reach with the setup I.m planing to built ???

I actually got an Alfa 500Mw USB(26 to 27db) + planing to get ---your 15Dbi omni antenna (biggest you got)--- + ---(not sure for now but let say 75 ft of your 400 cable)! ---

Now correct me if I.m wrong !
This would be ---

27db(Alfa) + 15Dbi(antenna) - 5db(Approx cable length)To leave me with around 37 dbm system ?

So on a clear sight and with only a wireless rooter(no hight power antenna)for signal what would be my approx reach with this setup as my cable length might play between 50-100ft depend on how high i need to go ?

Just want to make sure here of my actual knowledge and refine it also cause a wifi guy here told me that longer that 25ft of 400 cable would kill my signal ?!?!?
Let say i would need 75ft of 400 cable !!! As I.m concern it is only removing -5db of my total power and it would still be better than having 3 to 4db more and having a bunch of trees in the way ?

Is there something more i need to know about cable length and how it affect the system ???

Is my setup seem to be OK ?

Should i also be able to add a booster to my system in the future if not enough power ? But i think what i got is OK !... Would let say a 500mw booster just increase noise ? How much db would be the gain ?

I want to go with an omni as i also figure it is better to have a wider band antenna than a narrow directional when signal is not to far away and signal is bouncing on houses and walls ! I.ve test a bit and it seems that i get better gain with an omni ! An also i wont have to tune it to check witch friend i get better signal to hook with as they are a few houses away !

I.m i right ?

Thanks for your time !

Contents Hi !
I like to here from you Wifi guys out as i haven.t had any answer yet for my questions!
I.m wondering also if let say i have and 200Mw card if its enough to work with a 24dbi antenna ?

Is there.s a chart or any rule i could fallow to check different system i want to setup ...I want to know if i use a specific card(dbm)minus the cable(db)if its going to comply with and antenna dbi so i don.t go overboard ?

Also if your 15dbi omni antenna don.t give me the distance i want as a client what would be your next choice for greater distance but also widest range ? Is the 18dbi or 16dbi panel a good choice ? The 20dbi panel seems to be a narrow band ?

Thanks!
