Can I use a router as a repeater?
Author George Posted time 2006-09-09 10:47:52
Contents I am trying to connect a wireless-G network between two houses about 1000ft apart across a field with a few trees. There is a greenhouse about halfway between the two homes. My question is, if I place a router in the greenhouse, will it pass on the signal like a repeater even though it is not connected to a computer? I know I can use antenna.s to do the job, but wireless-G routers are cheaper, if it will work properly set up like this. Or, is a router the wrong choice of equipment for this purpose?
Thank You, George Jarick

Contents Yes, use a WRT54GL with DD-WRT V23 SP2 and look up WDS. It works great.

Contents You can try to use only router first,
If the signal is not strong enough, then add the antennas,

For the area like 1000ft, you can probably choose the Omni 8dBi 2.G antenna to transmit signal.

So we can discuss more after you try the router first.

Thank you
